Hardwood flooring is made from solid wood species like oak, maple, cherry, or walnut. It offers unmatched natural beauty with unique grain patterns in each plank. Hardwood floors are known for their warmth, durability, and ability to be refinished multiple times, extending their lifespan to potentially 100+ years with proper care. They add significant value to your home and can be installed in most above-grade rooms.
Solid hardwood is milled from a single piece of wood and can be sanded and refinished multiple times. Engineered hardwood consists of a real wood veneer attached to multiple layers of wood substrate, making it more stable and resistant to moisture and temperature changes. Engineered hardwood can be installed in areas where solid hardwood isn’t recommended, such as basements or over concrete slabs.
Hardwood flooring typically costs between $6-$15 per square foot for materials, with installation adding another $3-$8 per square foot. Exotic wood species, custom designs, or hand-scraped finishes can increase costs. Engineered hardwood generally ranges from $4-$12 per square foot. The total investment for a 200 sq. ft. room would typically range from $1,800-$4,600 including installation.
Hardwood floors require regular sweeping or vacuuming with a soft brush attachment to remove dirt and debris. Clean spills immediately to prevent water damage. Use a manufacturer-recommended hardwood cleaner for periodic deeper cleaning. Avoid wet mopping or steam cleaning. Refinish every 7-10 years depending on wear. Use furniture pads to prevent scratches, and maintain indoor humidity levels between 35-55% to prevent wood from expanding or contracting.
Laminate flooring is a multi-layer synthetic product fused together through a lamination process. It typically consists of four main layers: a wear layer that protects against scratches and stains, an image layer with a high-resolution photograph of wood or stone, a core layer made of high-density fiberboard (HDF) that provides stability and dent resistance, and a backing layer that provides structural support and moisture resistance.
Laminate flooring is highly durable and resistant to scratches, dents, and fading. Its wear rating (AC rating) determines its durability level, with AC3-AC5 being suitable for residential use. Laminate can last 15-25 years depending on quality, traffic, and maintenance. While not as long-lasting as hardwood, it offers better scratch resistance and doesn’t require refinishing. However, unlike hardwood, damaged laminate planks cannot be refinished and must be replaced
Laminate flooring materials typically cost between $2-$6 per square foot, with installation adding another $2-$8 per square foot. Higher-quality laminates with better wear ratings, thicker planks, and enhanced water resistance will be at the higher end of the price range. Additional costs may include underlayment, trim, and removal of existing flooring. DIY installation can significantly reduce costs as laminate is designed with user-friendly click-lock systems.
Vinyl flooring comes in several formats: Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) mimics hardwood in plank form; Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) resembles stone or ceramic tile; Sheet Vinyl comes in large, seamless rolls; and Vinyl Composition Tile (VCT) is commonly used in commercial settings. Modern luxury vinyl options feature high-definition printing technology for realistic wood and stone appearances, with textured surfaces that can closely mimic natural materials.
